This roughly 70-acre National Register district encompasses the original 1824 town plat, bounded by Howard Avenue to the north, College Street to the west, Pennsylvania Street to the south, and Virginia Street to the east, and contains over 210 contributing buildings, the majority residential, dating from the 1826,1942 period of significance. Homes here are among the oldest in Parke County, with two story brick and frame structures that almost certainly carry original galvanized or early copper plumbing lines susceptible to pinhole leaks, joint failures, and severe internal corrosion.
